The County of Montgomery, NY is a beautiful rural area steeped in U.S. Colonial history. It lies just south of the Adirondack Mountains and the length of the county is intersected by Interstate 90, the New York State Thruway.
The population of Amsterdam NY, the only city in Montgomery County, is 17,864. However, Montgomery County's location between Albany and Syracuse, along a major upstate artery, offers fairly easy access to transportation.

There is a public bus service in Montgomery County (headquartered in Fonda) that runs east and west along the Thruway.
There is a bus terminal in Amsterdam that serves Greyhound, Trailways, and Brown Coach
Several taxi services operate out of Amsterdam.
You will see that Montgomery County has access to several train lines within a very short distance.
There is a train station in Amsterdam that is served by Amtrak's Empire Service.

The Utica and Syracuse train stations also serve the east-west lines listed for Albany-Rensselaer (Empire, Lakeshore Limited, and Maple Leaf). This would include the "Syracuse to NYC train, which could be one or a couple of those listed above.

By far, the closest and most convenient near Montgomery County is Albany International Airport, about 55 miles away. Albany Airport serves many North American cities and has international connections via JFK, LaGuardia, and Newark.
A distant second choice would be Syracuse Hancock International Airport, which is about 100 miles from Montgomery County, is served by fewer airlines, and has fewer flights.
It's a stretch to say that Montgomery is close to NYC, other than noting the fact that it's possible to take the Thruway (I-90 and I-89) all the way. The drive could take several hours with the city traffic.
We'd suggest connecting from Albany instead if this is feasible.
Getting to Boston's Logan International Airport really doesn't take longer than the drive to NYC. Montréal's Pierre Elliott Trudeau Airport isn't much farther.
